3 things I learned watching The Devil Wears Prada

Shari Chan

As you may or may not know about the ICONIC film The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt has probably been talked about a lot as one of the most famous fashion movies out there. This is such a phenomenon movie that inspire so many young individuals that want to pursue journalism or any career in the fashion industry. This seems crazy to me, but I first saw this movie with my mom in my parent's bedroom when I was nine years old. I don't think this movie is appropriate for nine year olds, but hey I watched it and I still remember haha. As we all know, there are pros and cons to the industry that we must be aware of, therefore I'm here to share what I learnt while watching this movie.

1. Be Confident (as cliché as it sounds)

In the beginning of the movie when Andy enters Miranda Priestly office she didn't dress like everyone else in the office which is completely fine. But Miranda herself and Emily gave Andy a questionable stares towards her style which was really defeating on Andy. This lead to Andy completely changing her whole style and confidence. The confidence Andy had after her huge "glow up" the middle of the movie made me realize how much people and the things around you can really effect your confidence. Andy's confidence in herself and the effort she puts into her profession shows how much learning she did throughout her role as Miranda Priestly personal assistant. Andy's confidence skyrocketed, and she went to have a very successful career. As a result of her willingness to change for the better working for prestigious fashion editor.

2. Research is key

After watching the movie so many times I noticed that for the most part individuals tend to go for journalism or editor as a fashion job which I think those are such great careers choices. But I feel that this movie has "glamorized" the career of fashion journalism thinking it can be a career for everyone. Fashion journalism isn't everyones type of job and that is where research come in handy. Researching is key (besides networking) when it comes to finding a career you want because it allows you to find pros and cons in a job that people may not want to tell you about. In the movie, Andy was always going to be in journalism but it wasn't just fashion it was journalism in general. Before she got hired as Miranda Priestly personal assistant she didn’t know much about the fashion industry because she was never into the whole fashion runway magazine lifestyle. Luckily, when Andy got hired she was very lucky to have a colleague like Nigel to help her along the way as Miranda Priestly personal assistant. Andy did have to do research on her role as an personal assistant but she also had an amazing friend to help her get through the challenges she was facing. Overall, researching on a role, position and the work environment is one of the best way to get ahead and know what you are getting yourself into!

3. Learn from your mistakes

If you've seen the movie nearly a million times as I have, you will know that Andy has made several mistakes in her professional and personal life. Some of these were her connection with her significant other, making mistakes as a personal assistant, learning in a fashion economy, etc. Andy has undoubtedly overcome and learnt from all her failures to strive as a professional journalist. This forced her to develop and do things she had never done before, and her mistakes helped her recognize her needs and desires in her job and personal life. To me, learning from mistakes means personal development and evolution, which I believe the movie has represented in Andy's character. And I honestly feel it is a way to grow and establish relationships while learning from previous and present failures.

Those are the things I learned from seeing The Devil Wears Prada, and I will keep them in mind as I continue to learn and grow as an individual. This film has genuinely introduced me to the world of fashion, with numerous job choices other than journalism and editor, and has really encouraged me to continue conducting research to discover more about what position in the fashion business demands. Furthermore, since our economy is continuously changing, keeping up with fashion news is essential along with doing research and many more. With that stated, if you haven't seen The Devil Wears Prada, I highly encourage you to do since you never know what you could learn from watching that movie!
